Cycling Holiday Usedom: Active on the Baltic Sea in the Off-Season

OSTKÜSTE Boutique Apartments are located amidst the low-traffic imperial resorts of Heringsdorf and Ahlbeck, directly on Usedom Island’s cycling network, which spans over 200 kilometers. Bicycles can be securely stored at Villa Staudt (outdoor and underground parking spaces), Nadler Hof (bike cage with card or mobile access, also space for bike trailers), Kaiser Karl Apartments, and Villa Albatros (bike cellar in the building); outdoor bike racks are available at Villa Groth and Villa Steigel, and parking spaces are also available at Das Sellin am Schmollensee. In the underground garage of Villa Staudt, charging points for e-bike batteries are also provided. Private saunas ensure relaxation after your tour, and apartments up to 132 square meters offer space for equipment and tranquility. Best enjoyed in the off-season: in spring, when the hinterland blossoms, and in autumn, when the island becomes quieter again.

Usedom invites you for a cycling holiday as soon as the summer holiday rush is over – or before it has even begun. Those who cycle on Usedom outside the main season discover an island that takes its time: flat paths along the coast, quiet avenues in the hinterland, and imperial resorts where you can still stand almost alone on the pier in the morning. Exercise, fresh air, and a pace you set yourself – exactly what a holiday needs to have a lasting effect beyond the trip itself.

Cycle Paths on Usedom: 200 Kilometers Flat Along the Baltic Sea

Usedom is one of the most bicycle-friendly islands on the Baltic Sea. The coastal cycle path connects the imperial resorts of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf, and Bansin and continues via Streckelsberg and Zinnowitz to Peenemünde. If you prefer to venture into the hinterland, you can cycle past Schmollensee and Gothensee, through forests and small villages where time noticeably slows down.

Usedom is also a destination and stage for several long-distance cycle routes: The Berlin-Usedom Cycle Path (approx. 335 kilometers, usually in four to six daily stages) ends directly at the Ahlbeck pier, as does the Oder-Neisse Cycle Path (approx. 630 kilometers along the German-Polish border). The Baltic Sea Coastal Cycle Path (D-Route 2 / EuroVelo 10) from Lübeck via Rügen to the Polish border, and the Iron Curtain Trail (EuroVelo 13) along the former border, both pass through the imperial resorts. Those who ride one of these routes will find a convenient starting or finishing point in Ahlbeck and Heringsdorf.

The island is predominantly flat – a good basic fitness level is entirely sufficient; a training plan is not necessary. Through the UsedomRad rental system, bicycles and e-bikes are available at over 100 stations, which is practical for anyone who doesn’t want to bring their own bike or wishes to spontaneously switch between locations.

And if you are traveling with small children: it’s worth renting a cargo bike for a trip to the nearest ice cream parlor, for example. (Great rental bikes and service are available at Mietrad Station Ahlbeck or Fahrrad Kruggel)

Best Travel Time for a Cycling Holiday on Usedom: Spring and Autumn

In April and May, Usedom’s hinterland awakens: dandelions, poppies, and the violet liverworts in the coastal forest of Koserow turn every tour into a small riot of color. The days are already long, the paths still empty – cycling tours and hikes are practically in high season during these weeks, without the island becoming crowded.

In September and October, this tranquility returns: the Baltic Sea is still pleasantly mild after summer, the promenades are clear again, and the light over the dunes takes on its warm, autumnal hue. Those who prefer to experience the island in a more sporty and lively way will also find their destination in mid-summer – more on that shortly.

Holiday Apartment on Usedom as a Base Camp – Space for Bikes, Rest for Legs

A good cycling holiday begins and ends at the accommodation. How bikes are stored differs from house to house – here’s an overview:

  • Villa Staudt (Heringsdorf): Bicycle parking spaces outdoors and in the underground garage, with charging points for e-bike batteries. The underground garage opens via card or smartphone; there is also space for bicycle trailers.
  • Nadler Hof (Ahlbeck): lockable bike cage directly at the parking lot. It is automatically locked and can be opened with the apartment card or digitally – not covered, but with enough space for a bike trailer.
  • Kaiser Karl Apartments (Ahlbeck): Bicycle parking spaces in the basement of the building.
  • Villa Albatros (Ahlbeck): Bike cellar in the building, accessible via stairs.
  • Villa Groth (Ahlbeck): Outdoor bike racks. If you wish to store your bike securely, you can use the underground garage of Villa Staudt – about one kilometer away, approximately a three-minute bike ride.
  • Villa Steigel (Ahlbeck): Outdoor bike racks.
  • Das Sellin (Heringsdorf district) am Schmollensee: Bicycle parking spaces at the house, ground-level access, and a spacious garden – a quiet starting point for the hinterland; the loop around Schmollensee practically begins at your doorstep.

After the tour, high-quality, fully equipped kitchens await, where a late lunch or a shared dinner can be easily prepared.

If you truly want to relax your legs after a long stage, selected apartments in Villa Steigel and Villa Groth, as well as the apartment Das Sellin am Schmollensee, offer a private sauna – no wellness area with opening hours, but private tranquility directly in the apartment. And since all our houses are located amidst the low-traffic imperial resorts, the next stage begins right at your doorstep.

Four Cycling Tours on Usedom That Are Worthwhile

  • Coastal Cycle Path Imperial Resorts Loop: Ahlbeck – Heringsdorf – Bansin – Streckelsberg, along Europe’s longest beach promenade, with views of piers and spa architecture.
  • Hinterland Tour around Schmollensee: quiet forest paths and lake views, passing Sellin, ideal for a peaceful day without the Baltic Sea wind.
  • Streckelsberg Loop near Koserow: the island’s highest elevation, with steep cliffs and a wide panoramic view of the Baltic Sea.
  • Lieper Winkel Loop: through the quiet hinterland between Achterwasser and Peenestrom, with a stop at the Neppermin observation tower.

Viewpoints and Café Stops in Heringsdorf and the Hinterland

Some of the most beautiful moments of a bike tour happen off the main route – when you briefly dismount to catch your breath. Our team recommends the treetop walk in Heringsdorf, the steep coast near Bansin, the observation tower in Neppermin, and the Golm near Kamminke, which offers one of the widest views on the island.

For a coffee and cake break, we recommend Bäckerei Blunck in Ahlbeck, Kaffeeklaus in Heringsdorf, Café Röntgen, or Café Vergiss dein nicht with homemade cake in the garden – small, unpretentious, and just right for putting your feet up before continuing. Directly on the beach, Surfbox 2.0 is a popular stop for cyclists: good drinks and snacks with your feet in the sand.

Active Holiday on Usedom: Yoga, Golf, and Tennis Off the Bike

If you want to make your stay active beyond cycling, Usedom offers plenty: yoga is available directly at the Heringsdorf sports beach and in the spa and healing forest, as well as golf on the courses at Balmer See in Benz and Baltic Hills in Korswandt, plus beach tennis and volleyball in Ahlbeck. A nice addition for days when your legs need a break from the saddle, without your holiday coming to a standstill.

Evening on the Baltic Sea: Sundowners and Restaurants in the Imperial Resorts

After a long day in the saddle, the evening by the sea tastes especially good. For a quiet sundowner, we recommend Alex Strandbar in Heringsdorf, Café Knatter, Genusswerk Pier14, or Weinzimmer in Ahlbeck. If you’re still really hungry after the tour, you’ll be full and happy at Uwes Fischerhütte, Fischpalast Neppermin, or Kikis Bootsverleih & Gaststätte in Loddin.
